Geography

Welcome to the Geography section of our school website!

‘A high-quality geography education should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.’ (National Curriculum for Geography 2014)

At Southbury we strive to deliver a comprehensive Geography curriculum which will intrigue pupils to learn about the world.

Throughout Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, pupils develop their knowledge of people and places to understand the physical, social and economic forces which shape those places and the lifestyles of the people who live there. The children begin by studying the local area and extend these studies into the wider world. They learn to locate cities, countries, mountain ranges, rivers, continents and oceans using an atlas and digital maps.  The use of internet and new technologies empower children to explore and experience first-hand places far away. Geographical enquiry is undertaken inside and outside the classrooms and pupils are taught key skills such as; observing and recording, asking geographical questions and critically answer them, analysing evidence and drawing conclusions. These skills are then developed through other subjects such as English, Maths, History and Computing.
